Meet Some of Our RC’s! Breck, Rachel Thompson, & Matthew

This summer is full has been full of some amazing young adults doing great work for the kingdom. We have 3 new Summer Staff members who bring a very special heart to all there work. Breck has always enjoyed working with our Camp Joy (formally known as DD) but it has been amazing to see her pour out that same love to all her other campers.  Rachel Thompson is full of energy and excitement. Rachel seeks to spread joy to all she comes in contact with. Matthew is serving as our Wilderness/Oxley RC this summer. Matthew brings a light-hearted approach to counseling. He seeks to genuinely spend time with people and get to know them on a deeper level. All three of these RCs have a great heart for their campers and for this place.

Dream Job: Ellen Degeneres’s assistant or a Disney princess

Favorite Color: Yellow

Hobbies: Candles, perfume, giraffes, crafting, Kit Kats, star-gazing and quotes.

Interesting Fact: I’m a pro at quoting movies, and a master of Pinterest projects.

Favorite camp food: PIZZA AND CHEESY BREAD

Favorite camp activity: Singing and craft time.

A little about your experience coming to Lakeshore:

Lakeshore has always been a part of my life. I began at Mommy and Me and then I took a few years off and came back in fourth grade and was a camper every year until my junior year. After I got certified and began counseling I stopped going as a camper because I just loved counseling so much. This is my first summer on staff and I can’t wait to get started!

A moment you encountered God or where you see God at camp:

I always experience God the most when I am at DD Camp, I always see God through every single one of those campers. They are such a blessing in my life. I also encounter God in the stars. Astronomy is one of my major interests and I love that at camp they are so clear.

What does this ministry mean to you?

This ministry means more than I can put into words. Being able to come together with people of all ages to worship the most important man in our lives is such an incredible experience. I firmly believe that this ministry speaks to everyone at any stage of their relationship with God and He speaks to all of us in so many different ways when we come here.

Hobbies: Harry Potter enthusiast, traveling, sun bathing by the window

(which is taller than me) at home

A little about your experience coming to Lakeshore:

My first summer at Lakeshore was the year after third grade and I have
been coming every year since. I was baptized in the camp lake during
middle school and started volunteer counseling in 2008.  This is my
first summer on staff!

One of your many Favorite camp memories:

I really like funny camper quotes. This past summer during a movie
night the campers voted between The Lion King and How to Train Your
Dragon.  When the dean announced that How to Train Your Dragon had
won, a camper in the back of the room got upset and said “I hate my
generation.”

A moments you encountered God or where you see God at camp:

I see God in the people I meet at Lakeshore.  Because I am shy and
since the friends I was a camper with did not counsel with me, it took
me a few years of volunteering before I opened up to the other
counselors and staff. God has shown me so much love through these
people and through my friendships with them.  I feel God in the
relationships I have found through camp and that is what makes the
experience of Lakeshore so beautiful for me.

What does this ministry mean to you?

To me the ministry of Lakeshore means there will always be a place
where I can find myself surrounded by the most amazing people and by
the love of God, and that I will always be part of a community where I
feel unconditionally loved and accepted.

Matthew Owen

My first time at camp was an experience I think I’ll remember for the

rest of my life. That first week at Jr. High main camp in 2008 was the

reason why I counsel and have applied for staff. The reason being that

throughout that week at Lakeshore, I encountered God in ways I had

never imagined before and found a place that I could truly be myself

at. I believe in the power that one week can have on an individual and

since that first week at camp I have spent the majority of my summers

throughout high school being a camper and a volunteer counselor at

this amazing place. Lakeshore has become more than a place but a home

and a family for me. The sense of community shared by everyone is so

very strong because those relationships made at camp are made under

the foundation of Christ, the strongest foundation there is. It’s

simply a welcoming place to be yourself and have fun. To sum it all

up. I’m incredibly proud to be on staff this summer and  I can’t wait

see and experience all the joy its going to bring everyone involved.
